Sea milkwort- Glaux maritima L.

Stace pg 302/ Rose & O’Reilly (2006) pg 236/ BSBI Distribution: http://www.bsbimaps.org.uk/atlas/map_page.php?spid=930.0

This species, Sea milkwort, Glaux maritima was found within the wet area within “Glaux low” growing low amongst the rush species. It could be growing with saltmarsh, damp sand, dune, shingle and tidal mudflat habitats also.

It can be identified due to procumbent (creeping along the ground) to sub erect stems (10 to 30cm).It is a slightly succulent, rhizomatous perrenial with simple leaves (Stace 2005).

Leaves are stalkless, fleshy, strap shaped and blunt (4-12mm). Arranged in opposite pairs along the stem:

I do not have any pictures of this plant “in flower” but in fact this plant does not have petals, just sepals. However these are pink and could be easily mistaken for petals. They are found solitary in inflorescence axils, 5mm across. Fruits are capsules that later open by 5 valves (Stace 2005).

Do not confuse this species with Sea sandwort, Honckenya peploides.
