Bugloss- Anchusa arvensis (L.) M. Bieb.

Stace (2010) pg 559/Rose &O’Reilly (2006) pg 361/ BSBI Distribution: http://www.bsbimaps.org.uk/atlas/map_page.php?spid=1218.0

This annual was found behind the Lifeboat house on the dunes which are called “The garden”. Due to the blue flowers and the hairy surface of the plant, I looked within the Boraginaceae family and identified it (the alkanet) Bugloss, Anchusa arvensis. Note the calyx (whorl of sepals below flower) are divided almost to base (Stace 2010) and the corolla tube is curved (Rose &O’Reilly  2006):

This species grows procumbent to erect to a height of up to 50cm (Stace 2010) :

According to Stace (2010), leaves are undulate (wavy at edge in the plane at right angles) and up to 15cm long (Rose &O’Reilly 2006):

Flowers are blue, corolla base made up of a tube 4-7mm with a limb (or lip) 4-6mm across (Stace 2010) but corolla itself 5-6mm wide (Rose & O’Reilly 2006):

Picture not available but seeds are nutlets, 4mm wide (Stace 2010).
